  1. I tuned in to the Academy Awards during the last half hour or so. I find it amusing somewhat how people value the perception of the academy so much. Yeah, movies are great and some actors and actresses are very gifted, but do you need an entire academy to tell you that! I am not saying that the Academy Awards shouldn't exist, but what I am saying is that why does so much value in our culture have to be placed on what several hundred people think? I will mention that I do enjoy the awards, but still marvel at the value placed on the perception of the academy. I guess their created meaning reveals how the perception of the rich and famous is idolized in American culture.

  2. I did watch the Academy Awards. I enjoyed the performance by Hugh Jackman. I think he did great. He did the opening performance on a "budget" I thought it was well put together. The award show shows the actor some type of validation. In this case the highest validation there is for an actor is getting an Oscar. Same way an employee at an office would get a certificate showing them some appreciation for all their hard work. It keeps them validated as an employee just on a different scale from the actors. May it be a golden statue or a piece of paper saying thank you. Everyone wants to be validated in some way, shape or form. =o]

  3. I on the other hand did not get to watch the awards on Sunday, on monday I went of youtube and I managed to practically watch the whole thing. I was alot more convenient and I happened to really like the musical performance that Beyonce participated in it was great. But to comment on the awards it self I agree with the last comment posted everyone needs to feel apreciated for their work. In the case of actors receiving a gold statue symbolizes that. Even if there are many people even in my family that dont agree with any type of awards... I do believe their really needed so the person receiving the award see that their work was really apreciated and wasnt all done for granted. Congrats Penelope Cruz on winning best supporting actress.

  4. While viewing the Academy Awards I couldn't help but wonder, why are these award shows so long? Let's be honest the general public is not sitting on the edge of their seats awaiting the announcement of the winner for best animated short film. Let's be honest with ourselves here. I understand that the award show we watch has already been edited because of a ton of pointless awards no one but the nominees care about take place earlier in the night. I think Jackman did do a terrific job hosting and I really liked the bit done by Seth Rogan and James Franco when they were reviewing the movies that didn't when oscars. I do think the show overall is entertaining even the concert with Beyoncè wasn't half bad. Seriously though, they need to consider making the show shorter. The show was about three hours long and I only enjoyed about an hour of it. I do think that this year they tried to reach a younger audience and I appreciate that. Let's just shave another hour off the Academy Awards and I will have no problem.

  5. I actually sat through and watched the entire showing of the Oscars, for the first time ever, this year, and I think it was due to the fact that I had a personal interest. I was rooting for Slumdog Millionaire and the people behind it because I wanted it to take home at least a couple awards - 8 wasn't too shabby! A.R. Rahman, the music director, is a big name in the Indian film industry, and is a fellow Tamilian, so I was proud to see him receieve awards for Best Score and Best Song. I also liked the presentation of "best supporting actor/actress" and "best actor/actress" awards at this years Oscars. They seemed more personal and it was cool to see a change because it seems redundant each year.

  8. I love watching the OSCARS. I was surprised at how many people were wearing really ugly dresses. Did anyone see Jessica Biel was wearing? It was all over the place. I mean she has such a nice body. Anyway, I really liked Kate Winslet’s part. I am glad she won, it’s about time. Dustin Lance Black won for Screenplay for Milk and he gave a beautiful speech. It made me cry. My favorite part was the actor/actress nominees bringing out legends in their categories, and having each legend give a beautiful speech on the talent of each particular actor/actress. I was immediately sobbing. All the actresses started to cry too. It was truly a celebration of the talents of the nominees. It shifted focus from the winner, and back to the celebration of these nominees’ achievements. I hope it will be a tradition of announcing the actor/actress nominees. Abrar

  9. Luckily, I was able to catch the last half or so of the Oscars. I don't really have an opinion about the show overall, but I also really liked the way they presented the nominees for best actress/actor! I think that bringing out the legends like that really makes a big impact, and the fact that they wrote their own speech for the nominee they presented made it all the more special. I think that, in doing that, it made the Academy Award nominee presentations go from the I-it relationship to the I-you relationship. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that this year's presentations for the nominees for best actress/actor seemed more personal and meaningful because of how they presented it (with the individually written speeches). Whereas in the past, presenters would just make speeches about the category in general, and then announce the winner. Thus, not really acknowledging the nominees in any real way...

    am I wrong...?

  10. No, unfortunately I was not as consistent on watching the OSCARS as I had planned to be, but I did watch the RED CARPET. I love watching the RED CARPET, so I could see the gowns worn by the female celebrities. I have never shown much interest in what the male celebrities are wearing because they are always in tuxedos. Boring!!!!

Anyway, one part of the Oscars I did find very interesting, was the cameraman kept showing the responses of the reigning celebrity audience. The three audience members I caught sight to,was "Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston!!" Oh know!!! I thought the "Bradgelina Saga!" I kept wondering if there were cat glares between Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie during the awards ceremony. Would Jennifer Aniston love to come down the Red Carpet behind Angelina Jolie and trip her onto her face while she was posing for the paparazzi? I mean Angelina did steal Jennifer's man(Brad Pitt) a few years back. I wondered if Jennifer Aniston's perception of Angelina changed after the divorce rumors started to circulate? Did Jennifer Aniston's respect for Angelina Jolie as an actress/artist make a difference in how she viewed her ex-husband Brad Pitt when she saw the movie "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" that they made together? How about when Angelina Jolie started spitting out babies like the "Brady Bunch," and the paparazzi followed her every move. Nah, I think Jennifer Aniston got over it sooner than later, especially after she did the full, discreetly nude cover on the "Rolling Stones" magazine a few months back. I think that magazine cover alone was Jennifer Aniston's pay back, telling Brad Pitt in a nonverbal way, "Look at what you lost, Loser!!"

  11. I actually did not watch the Oscar's. I probably was one of the only ones not to do so. My thoughts on it are that celebrities shouldn't be going around in glamorous dresses and suits when we're having such a huge financial problem. Just one thought.

  12. I watched part of the Oscars, but not all of it. However, one part that stuck out the most and relates to class was when Penelope Cruz won. She was giving her thank you speech when she said forget about it if you think I can do this in 45 seconds. She also mentioned that she should get more time considering English is her second language. I though this was relevant because like we were talking about in class, there are not always exact words that translate into English. Overall, I thought her speech was cute eventhough she was extremely nervous.
